I’m so confused.
On Sunday, September 22, Houston, Texas held “Howdy Modi!” to honor India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. More than 50,000 people were estimated to attend, including President Trump and many other political and influential dignitaries.
Crazy thing is that just a few years ago, the U.S. State Department denied him a visa and access to the U.S. for “severe violations of religious freedom.” At the time, his government was implicated for anti-Muslim riots that resulted in more than 1,000 deaths (see The Washington Post]. He was banned from entering our country for nine years.
This weekend he will be celebrated with fanfare.
I’m dumbfounded. Did I miss something? What changed? Not Modi!
Since he and the Hindu nationalist party (BJP) took over, persecution against Christians and Muslims has skyrocketed and gone unchecked. Hindu nationalists blatantly disregard their written constitution providing freedom of religion and brutally attack their Christian neighbors.
Why? Because they can. And they are encouraged by the rhetoric their leaders spew to make India a Hindu nation – removing those who aren’t.
Prime Minister Modi is not someone we want to uphold as a role model. His recent thrust into an attractive spotlight has compelled me to challenge those who have been lured into this false narrative that he’s a good guy doing good things for the people of India. He is not.
I can’t help but wonder what our brothers and sisters who have suffered under Modi and his government will think when they hear of our warm welcome. It makes me feel ashamed.
Brothers and sisters, our Christian family is suffering greatly for Jesus’ name in India. Please pray for them. And please pray for wisdom and discernment for our leaders, so they see Modi for who he really is.
Please forward this message to your friends who love Jesus and pray.
Mercy and truth always,
